What Are the Differences Between Fiber Laser Cutting Machines and CO₂ Laser Cutting Machines?

Fiber Laser Cutting Machines vs. CO₂ Laser Cutting Machines

1. Fiber Laser Cutting Machines

A fiber laser cutting machine uses a fiber laser generator as its light source.
As an advanced new-type laser, the fiber laser emits a laser beam with high energy density. This beam is focused on the workpiece surface, instantly melting and vaporizing the area of the workpiece irradiated by the ultra-fine focused spot. Through the movement of the CNC mechanical system to adjust the spot’s irradiation position, automatic cutting is achieved—featuring high speed and high precision.

2. CO₂ Laser Cutting Machines

In the field of non-metal laser marking, common types include solid-state laser marking machines and gas laser marking machines (i.e., CO₂ laser cutting machines).
Non-metal laser cutting machines typically rely on a laser power supply to drive the laser tube to emit light. The light is refracted through several reflectors, transmitted to the laser head, and then converged into a single point by a focusing lens installed on the laser head. This point can reach an extremely high temperature, instantly sublimating the material into gas. The gas is then sucked away by an exhaust fan, thereby achieving the cutting purpose.

3. Advantages of Fiber Laser Cutting Machines Over CO₂ Laser Cutting Machines

  1. Superior Beam Quality: Smaller focused spot, finer cutting lines, higher work efficiency, and better processing quality.
  2. Higher Cutting Speed: Twice the speed of a CO₂ laser cutting machine with the same power.
  3. Stronger Stability: Equipped with imported fiber lasers for stable performance; key components have a service life of up to 100,000 hours.
  4. Higher Electro-Optical Conversion Efficiency:

    Thanks to the solid-state digital module and single-design of fiber lasers, fiber laser cutting machines have a higher electro-optical conversion efficiency than CO₂ laser cutting machines. The actual utilization rate of each power supply unit in CO₂ laser cutting machines is generally about 10%, while that of fiber laser cutting machines is approximately 25% to 30%. The overall energy consumption of fiber laser cutting systems is about 3 to 5 times less than that of CO₂ cutting systems, resulting in an energy efficiency of over 80%—making them energy-saving and environmentally friendly.

  5. Lower Operating Costs: The total power consumption of the entire machine is only 20-30% of that of similar CO₂ laser cutting machines.
  6. Lower Maintenance Costs:
    • No laser working gas is required;
    • Fiber optic transmission eliminates the need for reflective lenses;
    • Significant maintenance costs can be saved.
  7. Easier Operation and Maintenance: Fiber optic transmission means no need to adjust the optical path.
  8. Excellent Flexible Light Guiding Performance: Compact size and structure, easy to meet flexible processing requirements.
